CERATOCYSTIS WILT IN ‘UBÁ’ AND ‘DURA’ MANGO TREES UNDER WATER DEFICIT Rev. Bras. Frutic.
SILVA,SAULO DAVID REZENDE DA; SIQUEIRA,DALMO LOPES DE; SALOMÃO,LUIS CARLOS CHAMHUM; CECON,PAULO ROBERTO; ALFENAS,ACELINO COUTO.
ABSTRACT The occurrence of water stress in mango trees grown in orchards located in semi-arid climates in Brazil is frequent. Water stress caused to plants may predispose them to the incidence of fungal diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of water deficit on the incidence and severity of Ceratocystis wilt in mango trees considered resistant. Seedlings of ‘Ubá’ and ‘Dura’ were kept in pots and submitted to different water stress levels and inoculated with Ceratocystis fimbriata isolate (CEBS15). Mortality was low in ‘Ubá’ plants and high in ‘Dura’ plants. ‘Ubá’ plants showed lower severity and lesion length. In ‘Ubá’ plants, water deficit influenced the increase in lesion length. ‘Dura’ plants showed greater severity and lesion...

Changes in the behavioral and immunological parameters of the mollusk Biomphalaria tenagophila induced by disruption of the circadian cycle as a consequence of continuous illumination BJMBR
Waissel,I.; Mineo,J.R.; Natal,C.L..
In the present investigation we studied some behavioral and immunological parameters of adult gastropod mollusk, Biomphalaria tenagophila, which have been reproducing for several generations under laboratory conditions. One group of gastropods was kept on a 14-h light/10-h dark cycle, corresponding to a regular circadian cycle, and another group was exposed to continuous light for 48 h. Animals were studied along (behavioral groups) or immediately after (immunological groups) 48 h of regular circadian cycle or continuous light conditions. Stopping/floating, dragging and sliding were the behavioral aspects considered (N = 20 for regular cycle; N = 20 for continuous illumination) and number of hemocytes/µl hemolymph was the immunological parameter studied (N...

Characterization and variations of organic parameters in teleost fish endolymph during day-night cycle, starvation and stress conditions ArchiMer
Guibbolini, M; Borelli, G; Mayer Gostan, N; Priouzeau, F; De Pontual, Helene; Allemand, D; Payan, P.
The aim of the present work was to examine the modifications of the organic composition of fish endolymph under environmental conditions (day-night cycle, starvation and Cl-2-Stress) known to modify otolith growth. Endolymph electrophoretic patterns were compared. An antibody raised against the trout otolith organic matrix allowed examining the variations of organic matrix precursors in the endolymph under the above conditions. Western blot analysis showed bands around 60-80 kDa. A 50% decrease of immunolabelling was observed during the night whereas increases were seen after starvation (factor 3) or stress (factor 2) suggesting that these variations could be related to the organic matrix deposit. A factor retarding in vitro CaCO3 crystallization (FRC) was...

Combination of fixative agents and fixation times to visually differentiate the cortical from the medullary layer in bovine adrenal glands Anais da ABC (AABC)
OLIVEIRA,FABRÍCIO S.; MACITELLI,FERNANDA; SANTOS,CAIO C.C.; BRAGA,JANAINA S.; COSTA,BARBARA C.; PASTORE,MARINA; ROCHA,THIAGO A.S.S.; COSTA,MATEUS J.R.P. DA.
Abstract Chronic stress exposure commonly increases adrenals weight and changes their morphology. This study aimed to compare four methods to delimitate the cortical and medullary layers of adrenals glands in Nelore bulls. Fresh adrenals did not present differentiation between layers. Then, frozen adrenals were distributed in plastics bags with fixative Bouin (G1), 96ºGL ethylic alcohol (G2), 10% formaldehyde (G3), or 2.5% glutaraldehyde (G4). After 12 hours of fixation, the G1 adrenal glands did not show the entire cortical layer marked by Bouin’s solution. For G2 and G3 there was a poor contrast, while for G4 there was a reasonable contrast. After 24 hours of fixation, G1 had an excellent contrast between layers, while G2 and G4 had a reasonable contrast...

Combined effect of external ammonia and molt stage on the blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris physiological response ArchiMer
Mugnier, Chantal; Justou, Carole.
The effect of ambient ammonia and molt stage on the physiological response of the blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris was studied. Shrimps were submitted to 54.6 mg l(-1) ammonia-N (1.76 mg l(-1) NH3-N) for 24 h. Only shrimps in stages C, D-0, D-1 and D-2 were used for the analysis. Haemolymph was assayed for osmoregulatory capacity (OC), magnesium ion (Mg ion), total proteins, oxyhaemocyanin, lactate and glucose. Molt stage had an effect on OC, Mg ion and total proteins in control shrimps, and on OC, Mg ion and lactate in treated animals. Ammonia treatment decreased OC and lactate, and increase Mg ion concentration in haemolymph, for all molt stages. It decreased significantly total proteins and oxyhaemocyanin for stages D-1 and D-2, and increased...

Combined effects of water status and iron deficiency chlorosis on grape composition in non-irrigated vineyards Scientia Agricola
González,María-Rosa; Hailemichael,Girma; Catalina,Álvaro; Martín,Pedro.
ABSTRACT: Although water deficit and iron deficiency chlorosis are common environmental stresses in the Mediterranean area, few data are reported in the literature on their effects on vineyards, when acting simultaneously. The main objective of this research was to study the combined effects of iron deficiency and water status on vigor, yield and fruit composition in rainfed vineyards. Moreover, the investigation aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using foliar chlorophyll content (Chl) and predawn leaf water potential (LWP), measured at veraison, to assess potential quality of grapes in the framework of precision viticulture. For this, 24 non-irrigated ‘Tempranillo’ vineyard subzones were monitored in Ribera del Duero (North-Central Spain) during three...

Composto homeopático reduz a liberação de ânion superóxido pelas células mononucleares de ema (Rhea americana) Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Bertoldo,W.R; França,J.L; Fernandes,L.T.O; França-Botelho,A.C.
The action of the "Stress Factor Ostrich (Arenales - Fauna and Flora)" was tested in the release of superoxide anion by cells in the peripheral blood of rhea (Rhea americana). Sixteen samples of 0.5mL of venous blood were collected through the jugular vein in the morning and placed in heparinized tubes. The leukocytes were separated into polymorphonuclear (PMN) and mononuclear (MN). The production of superoxide anion by phagocytes of peripheral blood was determined using the chromogen ferricytochrome C. There was a reduction of superoxide by MN cells in the presence of "Stress Factor Ostrich" indicating a positive influence of product against oxidative stress. Furthermore, future researches, such as the evaluation of other reactive oxygen intermediates and...

Concomitant stress potentiates the preference for, and consumption of, ethanol induced by chronic pre-exposure to ethanol BJMBR
Morais-Silva,G.; Fernandes-Santos,J.; Moreira-Silva,D.; Marin,M.T..
Ethanol abuse is linked to several acute and chronic injuries that can lead to health problems. Ethanol addiction is one of the most severe diseases linked to the abuse of this drug. Symptoms of ethanol addiction include compulsive substance intake and withdrawal syndrome. Stress exposure has an important role in addictive behavior for many drugs of abuse (including ethanol), but the consequences of stress and ethanol in the organism when these factors are concomitant results in a complex interaction. We investigated the effects of concomitant, chronic administration of ethanol and stress exposure on the withdrawal and consumption of, as well as the preference for, ethanol in mice. Male Swiss mice (30–35 g, 8-10 per group) were exposed to an ethanol liquid...

DAIRY PRODUCTION OF ‘SAANEN’ GOATS BASED ON METEOROLOGICAL VARIABLES AND FUTURE CLIMATE SCENARIOS REA
Pequeno,Izaac D.; Turco,Silvia H. N.; Silva,Thieres G. F. da; Facó,Olivardo.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to modeling and bioclimatic zoning of ‘Saanen’ goat milk production in northeastern Brazil. Data were obtained from a 14-year dairy control program for 246 ‘Saanen’ goat matrices. Dairy production meteorological influence and mathematical modeling were assessed through statistical analyses such as Pearson’s correlation matrix and path analysis. Bioclimatic zoning for current and future scenarios, with climate changes, were delineated using inverse-square distance (ISD) and spherical model (kriging) interpolations. Results showed maximum air temperature to contribute substantially to goat dairy production; therefore, its modeling was based thereon. Current and future dairy production maps highlighted Maranhão and Piauí as regions...

Death of dogs and cats during grooming procedures: a little known reality in Brazil MV&Z
Maria, Anna Carolina Barbosa Esteves; de Siqueira, Adriana; Salvagni, Fernanda Aucielo; Maiorka, Paulo César.
With the growth of the pet market and its innovations, ownersof dogs and cats have increasingly alternatives for the health andwelfare of their animals. Establishments of bathing and groomingare becoming more popular, as many owners do not have thetime and ability to provide the adequate hygiene of their pets. However, many pet owners and even veterinarians are unawarethat dogs and cats can die during bathing or grooming, due tostress. Death related to stress may happen to sick or healthyanimals, regardless of breed, age or sex. In the bathing andgrooming environment, the presence of stressors is inevitable, but some rules must be followed to minimize the stress in theseanimals. This paper aims to provide information about the causeof death of these animals...

Design a biomimetic disc using geometric features of the claws CIGR Journal
Dehghan Hesar, Hadi; Kalantari, Davood.
This study presents a numerical investigation regarding the stress distribution on the new designed disc harrow using the ANSYS software. A conventional disc, notched disc, and a biomimetic design inspired by the claw of the leatherwing were analyzed in two conventional plowed and unplowed soils and three tillage depths (4, 7 and 10 cm). Stress analysis for all treatments showed that the highest stress was imposed at the disc-stem junction. Meanwhile the highest deformation occurred at the lowest and the most external part of the discs (land line). The results obtained in this study indicated that the maximum stress exerted from tilling soil to discs increases linearly with tillage depth in both plowed and unplowed soils. Given these results, the maximum...

Determination of gender in the pearl oyster pinctada margaritifera ArchiMer
Chavez-villalba, Jorge; Soyez, Claude; Huvet, Arnaud; Gueguen, Yannick; Lo, Cedrik; Le Moullac, Gilles.
The pearl industry in French Polynesia is based on exploitation of natural stocks of the black-lip pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera); it generates an annual turnover of 90 million euros. Improvements in pearl quality need genetic studies to improve the populations. This pearl oyster is a protandric species, where the sex-ratio normally is biased towards males. There is an increasing interest in gender control to find the mechanisms to augment female proportions for management purposes. This review summarizes information on exogenous and endogenous factors regulating gender in this and other bivalves and concludes that P. margaritifera is a protandric hermaphrodite, developing as a male during the first two years and without evidence of an effect from...

Dietary canitine maintains energy reserves and delays fatigue of exercised african catfish (Clarias gariepinus) fed high fat diets Scientia Agricola
Ozório,Rodrigo; Van Ginneken,Vincent; van den Thillart,Guido; Verstegen,Martin; Verreth,Johan.
Lipids, together with proteins, are traditionally considered as primary fuels during aerobic swimming. The effects of dietary fat and carnitine supplements and exercise on the energy metabolism of juvenile fish were investigated. One hundred African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) were fed four isonitrogenous diets containing a fat level of 100 or 190 g kg-1 diet and one of the two levels of carnitine (15 and 1000 mg kg-1). Fish grew from 61 to 162 g in 10 wk. Thereafter, 6 fish per group swam vigorously for 3 h and the results were compared with unexercised groups. Fish receiving 1,000 mg carnitine accumulated 2- to 3-fold more carnitine than fish receiving 15 mg carnitine. Plasma acyl-carnitine level was affected by an interaction between dietary treatment...

Differences in wing melanization and pigmentation pattern in Drosophila buzzatii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) under chemical stress Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Mongiardino Koch,Nicolás; Hasson,Esteban; Soto,Ignacio M..
Recently, the genetic basis and developmental mechanisms underlying the process of melanization have become progressively elucidated, allowing us to study the evolutionary processes that govern the huge variability of pigmentation observed in nature. However, environmental factors contributing to such variability have received little attention, even though they might have profound ecological consequences. Here we describe a method for analyzing the wing melanization patterns of drosophilids in both qualitative and quantitative ways. We test this method on wings of Drosophila buzzatii Patterson & Wheeler individuals, reared in control and alkaloid-enriched mediums. The alkaloids were extracted from the secondary host of these flies, Echinopsis...

Different stress modalities result in distinct steroid hormone responses by male rats BJMBR
Andersen,M.L.; Bignotto,M.; Machado,R.B.; Tufik,S..
Since both paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD) and stress alter male reproductive function, the purpose of the present study was to examine the influence of PSD and other stressors (restraint, electrical footshock, cold and forced swimming, N = 10 per group) on steroid hormones in adult Wistar male rats. Rats were submitted to chronic stress for four days. The stressors (footshock, cold and forced swimming) were applied twice a day, for periods of 1 h at 9:00 and 16:00 h. Restrained animals were maintained in plastic cylinders for 22 h/day whereas PSD was continuous. Hormone determination was measured by chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay (testosterone), competitive immunoassay (progesterone) and by radioimmunoassay (corticosterone, estradiol, estrone)....

Disturbance induced decoupling between host genetics and composition of the associated microbiome ArchiMer
Wegner, Karl Mathias; Volkenborn, Nils; Peter, Hannes; Eiler, Alexander.
Background Studies of oyster microbiomes have revealed that a limited number of microbes, including pathogens, can dominate microbial communities in host tissues such as gills and gut. Much of the bacterial diversity however remains underexplored and unexplained, although environmental conditions and host genetics have been implicated. We used 454 next generation 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing of individually tagged PCR reactions to explore the diversity of bacterial communities in gill tissue of the invasive Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas stemming from genetically differentiated beds under ambient outdoor conditions and after a multifaceted disturbance treatment imposing stress on the host. Results While the gill associated microbial communities in...
